XLRI BM vs HRM: Which Programme Should You Choose?

XLRI Jamshedpur offers two flagship two-year programmes through XAT: PGDM (Business Management), known as BM, and PGDM (Human Resource Management), known as HRM. Both carry the XLRI name, and their placement numbers are reported together, so the difference is easy to miss. Here is how they compare on curriculum, careers, placements, selection and fit.

The Short Answer

Choose BM if you want a general management career in consulting, finance, marketing, product or operations, and want to keep your options open. Choose HRM if you know you want to build a career in people and organisations, such as talent strategy, HR business partnering or HR consulting. The two programmes use the same entrance exam and a similar selection process, and XLRI reports their placements together, with a median of about ₹29 lakh and an average of about ₹31.4 lakh. So the real question is not which pays more, but which career you want to be doing in five years.

XLRI BM vs HRM at a Glance

Detail BM HRM
Full name PGDM (Business Management) PGDM (Human Resource Management)
Duration Two years, full time Two years, full time

Focus General management, with business functions such as marketing, finance, operations and strategy People, talent and organisations
Typical roles Consultant, product manager, strategy, finance, sales and marketing HR business partner, talent strategy, HR consultant, HR leadership programmes
Placements Reported together with HRM Reported together with BM

Fees are similar for both programmes, but they change every year, so check the current figure before you decide.

What Is Different in the Curriculum

BM builds a broad management base, then lets you move towards a function such as marketing, finance, operations or strategy. It suits people who want to try several areas before committing.

HRM is built around people management. It covers areas such as talent management, performance management, compensation and employee relations, along with the general management foundation that any MBA gives. It suits people who already know their interest is in organisations and people.

Both programmes share the XLRI name, campus and alumni network. The main difference is the direction of your learning and the first jobs recruiters see you for.

Placements: What the Numbers Show

XLRI's placement reports for the BM and HRM batch are combined, so there is no separate BM and HRM figure.

Figure (BM and HRM, 2024-26 batch) Value
Median package About ₹29 lakh a year
Average package About ₹31.4 lakh a year
Highest domestic package About ₹59 lakh a year
Highest international package About ₹1.10 crore a year
Average of the top 25% About ₹44 lakh
Average of the top 10% About ₹49 lakh
Recruiters About 145, including 25 new ones
PPO rate About 42.5%
Leading domains Consulting, BFSI, and sales and marketing

A few points matter here:

  • The BM and HRM figures cannot be split cleanly. The headline numbers cover both programmes, so do not assume one pays more than the other.
  • Consulting leads the offers, followed by banking and financial services and sales and marketing. HRM students are placed in HR and people roles, and many also go into consulting and general management roles.
  • The median is the most useful figure. It tells you what the middle student earned. Our post on how to read stipend numbers explains why.

For comparison, XLRI's PGDM (General Management) programme for experienced candidates reported a median of about ₹27 lakh in 2026. It is a different programme with a different batch.

Careers After BM and HRM

After BM After HRM
Management consulting and strategy HR business partner
Banking and financial services Talent acquisition and talent strategy
Sales, marketing and category management HR consulting
Product and programme management Learning, performance and compensation
General management trainee roles HR leadership programmes

HRM graduates are not limited to HR. Many move into general management and consulting, but the programme is built to give you an advantage in people roles. Admission: How XLRI Selects for BM and HRM

Both programmes use the same broad process.

  1. XAT score. XLRI uses your XAT performance for the first shortlist, along with academic background and relevant work experience.
  2. Interview stage. Shortlisted candidates go through the personal interview and other selection rounds.
  3. Final selection. The final list considers your XAT performance, interview performance, academic background, relevant work experience and extracurricular activities.

XLRI does not publish weights or a safe percentile. Expected calls are often discussed in the range of roughly 95 to 99 percentile, but that is an estimate and changes every year. Our guides to the XAT 2027 exam pattern and scoring and XAT 2027 Decision Making will help you prepare.

Eligibility: A bachelor's degree of at least three years in any discipline. Final-year students can apply, provided they complete the degree by the deadline set for that year.

Dates: XAT is on 3 January 2027, and registration closes on 6 December 2026. XLRI charges a small additional fee on top of the XAT fee to apply to its programmes. See our calendar of MBA forms closing in November 2026 for the colleges that close before it.

How to Choose Between BM and HRM

Ask yourself these questions.

Question If yes, lean towards
Do I want to keep my options open across functions? BM
Am I sure I want a people and organisations career? HRM
Do I want to start in consulting, finance or marketing? BM
Do I enjoy talent, culture, learning and organisation design? HRM
Do I have HR or people experience already? HRM, as it deepens your base
Am I unsure, and might change my mind after the first year? BM, as it is broader

This table is our judgement. The choice you make in your application matters, so decide it before the form, not after.

Common Mistakes When Choosing

  • Choosing HRM only because it seems easier to get into. XLRI does not publish separate cutoffs, so you cannot rely on that, and you will be explaining your choice in the interview.
  • Choosing BM only because it sounds broader. If your real interest is HR, you will have to explain why you did not pick HRM.
  • Ignoring your own profile. Panels look at whether your background supports your choice, so connect your work, projects and goals to the programme.
  • Not preparing a clear answer to "why BM" or "why HRM". It is one of the first questions the panel asks.
  • Treating the XLRI name as the whole decision. Compare other options too. Our comparison of FMS vs MDI vs SPJIMR can help you build a balanced list.

What We Do Not Know Yet

  • XLRI does not publish separate placement figures for BM and HRM, so a direct salary comparison is not possible.
  • XLRI does not publish weights or a safe percentile, so any cutoff you see is an estimate.
  • Fees, seats and selection details change every year, so check the latest.
