Top B-Schools in India for HR (Human Resource Management) in 2026
A dedicated HR programme gives you a clear route into talent, learning, compensation and labour relations roles. This guide compares six Indian B-schools with HR programmes, their entrance exams, selection steps and verified HR placement data.
Why HR Needs a Careful Look
HR is not one job. A graduate of an HR programme may become an HR business partner at a manufacturer, a talent advisor at a consulting firm, or a compensation analyst at a bank. Colleges also package the subject differently. Some run a standalone HR degree, some offer HR as a specialisation inside a general MBA, and some use a separate entrance exam. So the first step is to match the programme format and exam to your profile, and only then compare placements.
How We Picked These Colleges
This is not an official ranking for HR. NIRF publishes an overall management ranking and does not rank colleges by specialisation. We used three filters:
- A named HR programme or a recognised HR specialisation.
- Standing in the NIRF 2025 management ranking, where the college appears in that list.
- The most recent placement report we could read, with HR-specific figures wherever the college publishes them.
Many colleges report one combined figure for all programmes. Where that happens, we say so instead of guessing the HR number. TISS Mumbai does not appear in the NIRF 2025 management list we checked, and we could not confirm NIRF 2025 ranks for IIM Ranchi or SCMHRD, so we do not quote ranks for them. All amounts below are CTC in lakh per annum (LPA) unless stated, and each carries its batch label.
Quick Comparison
Top B-Schools for HR in India
1. XLRI Jamshedpur
XLRI began as a labour relations institute, and its HRM programme is among the best known in the country. The PGDM (HRM) is offered at the Jamshedpur campus and at XLRI Delhi-NCR, which is an extension of the Jamshedpur campus. It is a two-year programme that takes graduates from any discipline.
XLRI does not appear to split its headline numbers for HRM. HR hiring is visible in the recruiter lists, which name companies such as ITC, Tata Steel, Asian Paints and Vedanta against HR roles.
2. TISS Mumbai
TISS runs the MA in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations (HRM&LR) through its School of Management and Labour Studies. It is a smaller, more focused programme with a social-sciences flavour. Its placement reports are clearly HR-specific.
The Aditya Birla Group made the most offers in both batches we read. Other recruiters named include Accenture Strategy, Deloitte, ITC, Reliance Industries and Asian Paints. Check TISS for the current cycle, because the weights and cutoffs can change.
3. MDI Gurgaon
MDI offers a PGDM-HRM alongside its general PGDM, and it applies the same CAT-based process. MDI is ranked 9 in NIRF 2025 (Management). The HRM cohort is large, about 124 students in the latest batch, so the sample behind its numbers is bigger than at most HR programmes.
The HRM average sits below the batch average, so do not quote the headline MDI number as an HR figure.
4. IIM Indore (PGP-HRM)
IIM Indore runs a separate Post Graduate Programme in Human Resource Management, with its own admissions procedure and placement report. It is ranked 8 in NIRF 2025 (Management). The cohort is small, so a few high offers can move the averages.
The roles listed in the report include HR strategy consultant, talent management advisor, compensation and benefits specialist, learning and development specialist, and HR business partner. Recruiters named include Accenture Strategy, BPCL, HPCL, JSW and Tata Consumer Products.
5. IIM Ranchi (MBA-HRM)
IIM Ranchi offers an MBA-HR track next to its general MBA and Business Analytics programmes. Its published HR figures are lower than those of the schools above, but the programme sits inside an IIM selection framework.
The document we read does not mention a WAT stage. Median for MBA-HR was not reported.
6. SCMHRD Pune (Symbiosis)
The name stands for Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resource Development. HR is one stream of its MBA, alongside Sales and Marketing and Finance, and the college admits through SNAP.
Third-party pages differ on HR numbers. One lists the HR stream with a highest package of Rs 38 lakh, while another groups HR with Sales and Marketing and Finance and gives a different average. We therefore do not quote an HR average for SCMHRD. Check the official placement report.
Entrance Exams and Selection: What to Prepare For
Points that matter in practice:
- CAT is the most useful single exam here, since four of the six programmes take it. TISS and IIM Indore also set sectional cutoffs, so a lopsided score can cost you the call.
- Sectional minimums apply at IIM Indore (60, 60 and 75 for General in the CAT 2025 cycle) and at IIM Ranchi (75 in each section). Check them against your own section scores.
- XAT alone opens XLRI. Plan for the interview, which is where HR schools test your reasons for choosing the field.
- SNAP is a separate registration and a separate test cycle. SCMHRD weights the interview heavily at 40 marks.
- Work experience helps at several schools, and IIM Ranchi gives extra marks to MBA-HRM applicants with two to three years of experience.
Who Should Choose What
- You want a pure HR identity and can score well in XAT: XLRI's HRM programme.
- You want the lowest fee and a labour and social angle: TISS HRM&LR, which costs a small fraction of the private PGDM programmes.
- You want an IIM or large-cohort HR programme through CAT: IIM Indore (smaller cohort, NIRF 8) or MDI Gurgaon (larger cohort, NIRF 9).
- You have a mid-high CAT score and want an IIM HR route: IIM Ranchi, if the cutoffs fit your sections.
- You prefer SNAP and a Pune campus: SCMHRD, noting that HR is one stream in a general MBA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official ranking of B-schools for HR? No. NIRF ranks management institutes overall. HR strength has to be judged from the programme, curriculum, recruiters and placement data.
Do I need CAT for HR at TISS? For the MA in HRM&LR, TISS announced in November 2023 that admission would use CAT instead of TISSNET. Confirm the exam for your year on the TISS admissions site.
Does XLRI HRM publish separate placement numbers? In the reports we read, XLRI gave combined figures for BM and HRM. Ask the placement office for an HRM breakdown.
Is the HR average lower than the general MBA average? At MDI Gurgaon, yes. For batch 2024-26, the PGDM-HRM average was Rs 24.8 lakh against Rs 29.5 lakh for the whole batch.
Can I join an HR programme without work experience? At the schools we checked, work experience is a scoring factor and not a basic condition. XLRI lists a bachelor's degree as the eligibility requirement. Confirm each rule in the current brochure.
What HR roles do recruiters offer? IIM Indore's report lists HR strategy consultant, talent management advisor, compensation and benefits specialist, learning and development specialist, and HR business partner. TISS reports offers in the HR domain from conglomerates, consulting firms and banks.
Final Word
HR placements depend on the programme, the batch and the recruiter mix, so treat every figure here as a snapshot. Fees, cutoffs, seats and exam rules change each cycle, and some of the numbers above come from third-party summaries. Before you commit, read the latest placement report and admission brochure on each college's official website.
