Female Engineer vs Male Engineer: CAT Percentile and Target Colleges for 2026
Two engineers with the same CAT percentile can get very different results at the IIMs. The reason is not the exam, it is the shortlisting formula. Most IIMs add gender diversity points, and that changes the percentile a woman engineer needs for a call. Here is how much it matters, which colleges each profile can target at each percentile band, and what the points will not do for you.
The Short Answer
A female engineer typically needs about 1 to 2 percentile less than a male engineer with the same profile for an IIM call, and the gap is a little wider at the older IIMs outside the top three. It is not a free pass. The extra points are small compared with the interview and the writing test, and the top IIMs still call mostly very high percentiles. At the newer IIMs, where CAT carries more weight, the gap is smaller. If you are a male engineer with no work experience, you are in the toughest group for most IIM shortlists, so build your profile, not only your percentile.
Read this first. No college publishes a safe percentile, and the ranges below are estimates that differ between sources. CAT 2026 is on 29 November, and cutoffs move with the paper's difficulty. Use this as a planning aid, not a promise.
Why Gender Changes the Shortlist
IIMs shortlist on a composite score, and most of them give points for gender diversity. The exact points and the stage where they apply differ from IIM to IIM, and listings do not always agree, so treat these figures as approximate.
Because the points sit on a base of about 100, 3 to 10 points can offset a visible gap in percentile. In recent batches, IIM Kozhikode's 2026-28 class is about 66% women, IIM Bangalore's is about 41%, IIM Calcutta's about 33% and SPJIMR's PGDM class about 36%. These shares show how differently the IIMs run their selection.
Estimated Call Ranges: Male Engineer vs Female Engineer
These are estimated percentiles for an interview call in the general category with a typical profile, and they are not minimums.
What the Table Shows
- At IIM A, B and C, the gap is about 0.5 to 1.5 percentile. CAT is only 25 to 30% of the composite there, and the interview and writing test dominate, so the diversity points matter less than you might expect.
- At IIM L, K and I, the gap is wider, about 1.5 to 2.5 percentile. Gender points are a larger part of the shortlist, and the shortlists have been closer to parity.
- At newer IIMs, the gap is about 1 percentile. CAT carries 47 to 65% of the composite at several of these, so your percentile counts more directly.
- Advice online sometimes claims bigger gaps, such as a woman at 97 percentile getting calls that a man would need 99.5 for. Plan on a 1 to 2.5 percentile gap, and treat anything bigger as a bonus, not an assumption.
Target Colleges by Percentile Band
Stretch means possible with an excellent profile. Target means a realistic chance with an average to good profile. Safe means the college is likely to call you, though the interview still decides the result.
Beyond the IIMs: Where Gender Also Counts
- FMS Delhi and MDI Gurgaon add a few marks for women, which matters at their narrow cutoffs.
- XLRI is reported to apply lower XAT cutoffs for women, often by around 2 to 3 percentile, but it uses XAT, not CAT. See our guide to XLRI BM vs HRM.
- SPJIMR gives weight to diversity in its profile-based selection, but does not publish the points. Our post on who should apply to SPJIMR explains how a profile-first school reads your application.
What Gender Points Will Not Do
- They do not remove the sectional cutoffs. Missing a sectional cutoff in VARC, DILR or QA can end your shortlisting, whatever your gender.
- They do not replace the interview. At IIM A, B and C, the interview and writing test make up most of the final score.
- They are not the same at every stage. At several IIMs, the points apply at shortlisting and not in the final merit list.
- They are not a substitute for academics and work experience. Female engineers with weak academics and no work experience still face a tough shortlist at the top IIMs.
- They change with the cycle. IIMs revise the weights every year. IIM Ahmedabad raised its points recently, and IIM Kozhikode changed how diversity is scored.
How Male and Female Engineers Can Improve Their Chances
If you are a male engineer
- Work experience helps. Many IIMs add points for work experience, and Bangalore weighs it strongly.
- Academics count. Strong Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks offset a slightly lower percentile at several IIMs.
- Aim for a balanced CAT score. A strong overall percentile with no weak section is safer than one very high section and a very low one.
- Prepare the interview early. Our guide to the mistakes to avoid in the last six weeks before CAT 2026 covers how to prepare your stories.
If you are a female engineer
- Do not rely on the gender points alone. Build your academics, projects and work experience, since those carry the interview.
- Apply widely. Your diversity points apply at many IIMs, so build a list across the range. Our calendar of MBA forms closing in November 2026 shows the forms that close first.
- Know each IIM's criteria. The weights differ, so read each one. Our post on IIM Calcutta's MBA selection criteria for 2027 shows how one IIM builds its score.

What We Do Not Know Yet
- IIMs do not publish safe percentiles, and the ranges differ between sources, so use them as estimates.
- The exact points for gender, and the stage where they apply, change from cycle to cycle and are not always stated clearly.
- CAT 2026 cutoffs depend on the paper's difficulty and the number of test-takers.
- Reserved category cutoffs differ by IIM, so check each IIM's policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much lower can a female engineer score for an IIM call? Estimates put the gap at about 1 to 2.5 percentile compared with a male engineer with the same profile, depending on the IIM.
Which IIMs give points for female candidates? Most of them do, including Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode, and many newer IIMs. The points vary from about 3 to 12, and the stage differs by IIM.
Is a woman at 97 percentile likely to get an IIM Lucknow or Kozhikode call? Possibly, with a strong profile. Estimated ranges for female engineers at these IIMs start at about 95.5 to 96, but this is not guaranteed.
Do male engineers have the toughest shortlist? At most IIMs, general male engineers with no work experience have the highest estimated cutoffs, because they get no diversity points.
Do gender points apply at the final stage? At some IIMs, they apply only at shortlisting, and at others they also count in the final score. Check each IIM's criteria.
Does gender diversity matter at non-IIMs? At several, yes. FMS Delhi and MDI Gurgaon add marks for women, and XLRI is reported to use lower XAT cutoffs for women.
Should a female engineer apply only to IIMs? No. Use a range of stretch, target and safe colleges, since the diversity points are small compared with the interview.
Final Word
Gender points can move a female engineer's shortlist by a percentile or two, but the interview, academics and work experience still decide the outcome. Male engineers should work on profile and balance, and female engineers should use the advantage without relying on it. Build a list with stretch, target and safe colleges, and fill the forms that close before CAT. Cutoffs and points change every year, so confirm the latest criteria on each college's official admissions page before you decide.
