IIM Calcutta MBA Selection Criteria 2027-29: Cutoffs, Weightage and Scoring Explained

IIM Calcutta does not pick its MBA batch on CAT score alone. Your percentile gets you through the door, but your Class 10 and 12 marks, degree background, work experience and interview decide who actually gets in. Here is how the IIM Calcutta MBA 2027-29 selection process works, stage by stage, with the cutoffs and the point system.

IIM Calcutta Selection Process at a Glance

The process has three steps, and the framework for 2027-29 is the same as 2026-28.

Stage What happens
Stage I: Qualifying cutoffs You must clear the CAT 2026 sectional and overall percentile cutoffs for your category, with non-negative raw scores in every section
Stage II: Shortlisting A composite score out of 85 decides who gets the WAT and PI call
Final selection A composite score out of 100, combining CAT, PI, WAT, academic diversity and work experience

Stage I: CAT Percentile Cutoffs

These are the minimum percentiles required in each section and overall.

Category VARC DILR QA Overall
General (Open) 80 80 75 85
EWS 70 65 65 75
NC-OBC 70 65 65 75
SC 65 60 60 70
ST 55 55 55 65
PwD 45 45 45 55

Clearing these only makes you eligible for the next stage. It does not guarantee an interview call, and the effective cutoff for a call can be higher than these minimums.

Stage II: Shortlisting Score (Out of 85)

Candidates who clear Stage I are ranked on a composite score out of 85.

Component Marks
CAT score 56
Class 10 marks 10
Class 12 marks 15
Gender diversity 4
Total 85

How Class 10 and Class 12 Marks Are Scored

Percentage Class 10 points Class 12 points
80% and above 10 15
75% to below 80% 8 12
70% to below 75% 6 9
65% to below 70% 4 6
60% to below 65% 2 3
Below 60% 0 0

The marks considered are the aggregate of all subjects on your marksheet, including subjects the board leaves out of its official percentage.

Final Selection Score (Out of 100)

After the Personal Interview (PI) and Writing Ability Test (WAT), the final merit score is calculated like this:

Component Marks
Personal Interview 48
CAT score 30
Writing Ability Test 8
Work experience 8
Academic diversity 6
Total 100

The PI alone carries nearly half the final weightage. A strong CAT score opens the door, but the interview is where the seat is won.

Academic Diversity Points (Maximum 6)

IIM Calcutta rewards candidates from non-engineering backgrounds and professional qualifications. Some of the categories reported:

Background Points
Engineering bachelor's degree only 0
Bachelor's in a non-engineering stream 4
Dual bachelor's degree in law (BA LLB, BBA LLB) 5
Bachelor's and master's, both non-engineering 5
Engineering bachelor's with non-engineering master's 2
CA / ICWA / CS / FIAI with a bachelor's degree 6
Integrated law degree with non-engineering master's 6

This is a partial list. The full category table is in the official admission policy.

Work Experience Points (Maximum 8)

Only experience gained after your bachelor's degree counts. Internships, apprenticeships, training, unpaid work and work done as part of a curriculum are excluded. Experience is measured in completed months as of 31 January 2027.

Completed months (x) Points
Up to 6 0
More than 6, up to 24 x / 3
More than 24, up to 36 8
More than 36, up to 48 26 − x / 2
More than 48 2

In short, the score rises with experience, peaks between 2 and 3 years, and then tapers off. You will need employer documents and payslips as proof. Self-employed candidates or those in a family business need registration, licence or tax records.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates)
  • Final-year students can apply, subject to meeting the documentation requirements and deadlines
  • A valid CAT 2026 score

How to Plan Your Application

  • Know your category cutoffs first. One weak section can knock you out even with a high overall percentile.
  • Treat Class 10 and 12 marks as fixed points. You cannot change them now, so find out exactly how many points you are carrying into Stage II.
  • Prepare for the PI like it is a second exam. At 48 marks it outweighs everything else.
  • Practise the WAT. It is worth 8 marks and is easy to neglect.
  • Collect work-experience proof early. Offer letters, relieving letters and payslips take time to arrange.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CAT cutoff for IIM Calcutta? For the General category it is 85 overall, with at least 80 in VARC, 80 in DILR and 75 in QA.

Does clearing the cutoff guarantee an interview call? No. These are minimum qualifying percentiles. Shortlisting is by the composite score out of 85.

How much does the interview count? 48 out of 100 marks in the final selection.

Is a gender diversity benefit given? Yes, 4 marks in the Stage II composite.

Do engineers lose out? An engineering-only background earns 0 academic diversity points out of 6, so engineers make up for it through CAT, the interview and work experience.

Final Word

IIM Calcutta looks at the whole profile, not just the CAT percentile. Use your CAT preparation to clear the cutoffs, then spend the rest of your time on the PI and WAT. Criteria can be revised between cycles, so always confirm the latest details on the official IIM Calcutta admissions website.
