IIM Bangalore MBA Selection Criteria 2027-29: Cutoffs, Weightage and Scoring Explained

IIM Bangalore does not select its PGP batch on CAT score alone. Your Class 10, 12 and graduation marks, work experience, WAT and a 40-mark interview all count. Here is how the 2027-29 process works, stage by stage, with the cutoffs and the point system.

IIM Bangalore Selection Process at a Glance

Stage What happens
Stage I: CAT cutoffs You must clear the sectional and aggregate CAT percentiles for your category, with a positive raw score in every section
Pre-PI shortlist A composite score out of 100 decides who is called for the WAT and personal interview
Stage II: WAT and PI Both are held on the same day at the same location
Final selection A post-PI composite score out of 100, and offers are made strictly on this score within each category

IIMB states that the process applies to the 2027-29 cycle only and may be changed.

Stage I: CAT Percentile Cutoffs

These are the minimum percentiles for the first shortlist. IIMB lists them against CAT 2025 and the 2026-28 batch, and has not published separate figures for CAT 2026 in the document we read, so treat them as the latest guide.

Category VARC DILR QA Aggregate
General 80 75 75 85
NC-OBC 70 65 65 75
EWS 70 65 65 75
SC 65 60 60 70
ST 55 55 55 65
PwD 50 50 50 60

These are minimums. IIMB says the cutoffs for the interview call are higher, so clearing them does not guarantee a call.

Pre-PI Score (Out of 100)

The shortlist for the WAT and PI is based on this composite.

Component Marks
CAT 55
Class 10 10
Class 12 10
Bachelor's degree 10
Work experience or professional course 10
Gender diversity 5
Total 100

Within the 55 CAT marks, the sections are weighted as follows.

CAT section Pre-PI marks
VARC 19
DILR 21
QA 15

DILR carries the most marks here, and QA the fewest. Gender diversity marks apply only at the pre-PI stage.

Post-PI Score (Out of 100)

After the WAT and PI, final offers are made strictly on this score.

Component Marks
Personal interview 40
CAT 25
WAT 10
Work experience or professional course 10
Class 10 5
Class 12 5
Bachelor's degree 5
Total 100

The CAT marks are split VARC 8.75, DILR 10 and QA 6.25. The interview is the largest single block, so a strong PI can lift a modest pre-PI score, and a weak one can undo a high CAT score.

How Academic Scores Are Calculated

IIMB does not publish a table that converts your percentage into points, the way some other IIMs do. Instead, each component is standardised against the pool of candidates, using the average and the standard deviation, and capped between zero and the maximum marks for that component.

In simple terms:

  • A candidate at the pool average gets about half the marks for that component.
  • A candidate well above the average moves up towards the full marks.
  • A candidate well below the average moves down towards zero.

The official formula is: Max [0, min {weight, weight/2 + ((value minus mean) / standard deviation) x weight / 6}]. The practical point is that your marks are judged against other applicants, not against a fixed scale.

Work Experience Points

Experience is counted in completed months, up to July 2026 for the 2027-29 cycle. Internships, apprenticeships, articleships and unpaid work do not count.

Pre-PI score: 10 x months / 36 for experience under 36 months, and the full 10 for 36 months or more.

Work experience Pre-PI points
12 months About 3.3
24 months About 6.7
36 months or more 10

Post-PI score: After the interview, the work-experience weight is scaled from 10 to 5 and multiplied by an average quality rating given by the panel. Each panel member scores on a scale of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2. A top rating of 2 therefore gives the full 10 marks, and a lower rating gives less.

So in the post-PI score, how your experience is judged in the interview matters, not just how many months you have. If you have both a professional qualification (CA, ICWA, CS) and work experience, the higher of the two scores is used.

IIMB warns that false claims about employment can lead to rejection and a three-year bar from its programmes.

Does IIM Bangalore Give Academic Diversity Points?

The 2027-29 process document does not list an academic diversity component. Unlike some other IIMs, there is no separate block of marks for being a non-engineer. Engineers and non-engineers are both judged on the same components above, so your edge comes from your CAT score, academics, work experience and interview.

Automatic PI Qualification

The top ten candidates in each of these three lists go straight to the personal interview stage:

  • Total CAT score
  • Adjusted bachelor's score (for commerce, arts and science graduates)
  • Professional score (CA, ICWA, CS)

Eligibility

  • A bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, or 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates
  • Or a completed professional qualification such as CA, CS, ICWA (CMA) or FIAI
  • A valid CAT score on the date you submit the application
  • Two online reference letters. Referees are preferably current or past employers, or teachers, and they must submit directly by the application deadline. No extensions are given.

WAT and Personal Interview

IIMB holds the WAT and PI on the same day at the same location. The WAT lasts about 30 minutes, and you write a note that is judged on content and style. The official document gives no further detail on the interview format.

If you could not get Class 10, Class 12 or graduation marks because of COVID, that component gets no weight and the rest are adjusted.

How to Plan Your Application

  • Check your cutoffs for your category first. One weak section can end your chances even with a high overall percentile.
  • Give DILR extra time. It carries the most CAT marks in both the pre-PI and post-PI scores.
  • Treat the interview as the main event. At 40 marks, it carries more than any other component after the pre-PI stage.
  • Practise the WAT. It is 10 marks and many candidates neglect it.
  • Choose your referees early. Both letters must arrive by the deadline, and no extensions are given.
  • Prepare to talk about your work. The panel's quality rating decides how much of your work-experience marks you actually keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CAT cutoff for IIM Bangalore? For the General category, the listed minimum is 85 aggregate, with 80 in VARC, 75 in DILR and 75 in QA. These figures are labelled for the 2026-28 cycle, and the interview-call cutoff is higher.

How much weight does the interview carry? 40 marks out of 100 in the final post-PI score.

Does IIM Bangalore have a gender diversity benefit? Yes, 5 marks, but only in the pre-PI shortlist score.

Is there an academic diversity score? The 2027-29 process document does not list one.

How is work experience scored? Before the interview, you get 10 x months / 36 up to 36 months, then the full 10. After the interview, the panel's quality rating scales the marks.

Do I need reference letters? Yes, two online letters are mandatory, and no extensions are given.

Can final-year students apply? You need a valid CAT score and must meet the degree rules at the time the process requires. Check the IIMB admissions page for the current rule on final-year candidates.

Final Word

IIM Bangalore looks at the whole profile, not just the CAT percentile. Use your CAT preparation to clear the cutoffs, then spend the rest of your time on the interview, the WAT and how you present your work experience. Criteria and cutoffs can be revised between cycles, so always confirm the latest details on the official IIM Bangalore admissions website.
