Top B-Schools in India for Marketing 2026-27: Placements, Rankings and Entrance Exams
If you want a career in brand, product or consumer marketing, the college you pick shapes your first job. This guide compares eight B-schools using NIRF 2025 management ranks and the latest published placement reports, with marketing-specific data wherever a source gives it.
Why Marketing Needs a Different Lens
Most B-school placement reports are dominated by consulting and finance. Marketing roles often sit inside "sales and marketing", "FMCG" or "general management" buckets, and each college defines these differently. That makes a plain average-package comparison misleading for a marketing aspirant.
So look beyond the headline CTC. Check how many offers came from consumer companies, whether the report splits marketing from sales, and what the marketing-specific average looks like. This post flags where such data exists and where it does not.
How We Picked These Colleges
We started with the NIRF 2025 management ranking and kept colleges that are known for marketing and consumer-goods hiring and that publish a recent placement report. We then read the latest available reports (mostly the batches that graduated in 2026) and kept only numbers we could trace to a source.
This is not an official ranking for marketing. NIRF does not rank by specialisation, and the order below follows NIRF 2025 rank, not our opinion of which college is better. Some colleges, such as FMS Delhi and IIFT, were left out only because we could not verify enough marketing-relevant data for this post. Placement reports differ in how they define "sales and marketing", so treat cross-college comparisons as rough.
Quick Comparison
CTC definitions differ. Some colleges report cash, some report maximum earning potential, and some include variable pay. Read the notes in each report.
Top B-Schools in India for Marketing
1. IIM Ahmedabad
IIM Ahmedabad is ranked first in NIRF 2025 management. Its placements lean heavily towards consulting and finance, but its brand, alumni network and recruiter list reach into consumer companies as well. For marketing, the thing to know is that the sales and marketing function is a small share of the batch.
2. IIM Bangalore
IIM Bangalore is ranked second in NIRF 2025. Its official placement page gives an FMCG/Retail count, which is useful for marketing aspirants. The summer placement page for the 2025-27 batch shows a wider list of consumer recruiters.
3. IIM Lucknow
IIM Lucknow is ranked fifth in NIRF 2025 and publishes a sector breakdown that includes a sales and marketing line with its own salary data. It is one of the few colleges where you can see the marketing function's pay separately.
4. IIM Calcutta
IIM Calcutta is ranked seventh in NIRF 2025. Its 2026 report groups marketing with general management, so the marketing share cannot be isolated. Consumer majors such as Hindustan Unilever and P&G are named among participants.
5. MDI Gurgaon
MDI Gurgaon is ranked ninth in NIRF 2025. Its official placement report lists the sales and marketing function and an FMCD/FMCG sector line, both useful for marketing aspirants. It also reports a good number of FMCG recruiters.
6. XLRI Jamshedpur
XLRI is ranked tenth in NIRF 2025. Its 2026 report names sales and marketing among the leading recruitment domains for the PGDM (BM) and HRM batches, though it does not give a percentage for the function.
7. SIBM Pune
SIBM Pune is ranked eleventh in NIRF 2025. It is one of the few colleges in this list with a published marketing-specialisation salary, and in the batch reported, marketing had the highest specialisation average.
8. SPJIMR Mumbai
SPJIMR is ranked twentieth in NIRF 2025, but its press release gives a rare piece of marketing data: the FMCG share within the marketing cohort. Its placement figures are also among the more detailed in this list.
SPJIMR also runs a separate Post Graduate Programme in Marketing and Business Management for people with at least one year of work experience. That is a different route from the PGDM.
Entrance Exams and Selection
The IIMs combine your CAT score with academics, work experience and diversity factors, then call shortlisted candidates for a written test and interview. MDI shortlists on a profile score and follows with GD, WAT and PI rounds. SPJIMR uses profile-based shortlisting and an interview before a composite final score. XLRI shortlists on XAT, academics and work experience before interviews. SIBM Pune uses a group exercise and a personal interview after the SNAP shortlist, with SNAP test dates in December 2026.
Weightage and cutoffs change every cycle, so confirm them on each college's official admissions page.
Which College for Which Profile
- You want a college with a visible marketing and FMCG footprint in the data: SPJIMR (FMCG share inside the marketing cohort), SIBM Pune (marketing specialisation average) and IIM Lucknow (sales and marketing line with pay) publish the clearest marketing numbers in this list.
- You want the widest recruiter pool and are open to general management: the older IIMs publish large offer counts, and marketing sits inside broader categories. IIM Calcutta groups it with general management; IIM Bangalore shows FMCG/Retail separately.
- You want a profile with consumer-goods recruiters at scale: MDI Gurgaon reports 19 FMCD/FMCG recruiters, and XLRI lists sales and marketing among its top domains.
- You are a fresher with a SNAP score: SIBM Pune is the option in this list that uses SNAP.
- You are a fresher with an XAT score: XLRI is the only college here that uses it as the main route.
- You are a CAT test-taker with a mid-range percentile: compare MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR and IIM Lucknow on profile fit, not just average CTC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which B-school is best for marketing in India? There is no official ranking by specialisation. NIRF 2025 ranks IIM Ahmedabad first overall in management, but marketing strength depends on recruiters, electives and the roles you want. Compare marketing-specific data such as FMCG share, brand and product roles, and past hiring from consumer companies.
Is a high package in a marketing role the same as in consulting? Not always. Where colleges publish function-wise pay, the sales and marketing average has been lower than overall averages. For example, IIM Lucknow's sales and marketing mean CTC for 2026 was ₹28.5 lakh against an overall average of ₹33.2 lakh, and SIBM Pune's marketing average in the 2023-25 batch was above its overall figure. Check the function-wise data for your target college.
Do I need work experience for a marketing career? Not necessarily. Freshers are admitted at all the colleges here, though work experience can count in selection at some of them. For XLRI and SPJIMR, check each programme's current eligibility.
Can I get into marketing roles from any of these colleges? Marketing roles can be reached through summer internships, final placements and pre-placement offers. FMCG and consumer firms recruited at the IIMs and other colleges in this list. Your internship and project choices matter as much as the college brand.
Are NIRF ranks enough to choose a college? No. NIRF is a general institutional ranking. Use it as one input along with placement reports, curriculum, location, fees and your own career goal.
Where can I see the full placement reports? Each college publishes its own report or press release. Where numbers here are labelled as secondary, check the official report before relying on them.
Final Word
Pick a college by looking at what it actually reports for marketing and consumer roles, not only the headline package. Fees, placement figures, cutoffs and selection criteria change each year, and some numbers above come from news reports of official data. Always confirm the latest details on each college's official website before you decide.
