Top B-Schools in India for Finance 2026: Colleges, Placements and Entrance Exams
Seven Indian B-schools that are strong for finance careers, with the latest placement data we could verify, finance recruiters and the entrance exam each one needs.
Why Finance Aspirants Should Look Beyond the Overall Rank
A B-school's overall rank does not tell you how many of its graduates go into finance. Some colleges send a large share of the batch to banks, private equity firms and asset managers. Others place more students in consulting, FMCG or technology. For a finance aspirant, the useful questions are these: how many offers come from banking and financial services (BFSI), which banks and funds recruit on campus, and what finance electives and clubs the college offers.
This post covers seven colleges. For each one we give the overall rank where it exists, the finance placement signal where a source supports it, and the entrance route.
How We Picked These Colleges
We used three inputs. First, the NIRF 2025 management ranking, as the only government-run ranking that covers most of these colleges. Second, known strength in finance, judged by the recruiter lists and BFSI or finance shares in the latest placement reports. Third, how much verified placement data we could actually find.
This is not an official ranking for finance. NIRF does not rank colleges by specialisation, and the order of the colleges below is not a ranking. Different colleges also report placements in different ways. Some report the share of offers, others the share of students, and "finance" can mean banking, private equity, wealth, or all of BFSI. Compare the numbers with care.
Some well-known names are missing because we could not verify enough recent data for them. That does not mean they are weak in finance.
Quick Comparison
Top B-Schools in India for Finance
1. IIM Ahmedabad (PGP)
IIM Ahmedabad holds NIRF 2025 rank 1 in management. In its PGP 2025 final placements, BFSI was the second-largest sector with 99 offers, behind consulting. One report also notes that the highest domestic package that year came from BFSI. The college is a good fit if you want finance and consulting both kept open.
2. IIM Bangalore (PGP)
IIM Bangalore is NIRF 2025 rank 2. The institute's March 2025 media release said consulting made up 41% of offers for the PGP and PGP-BA class of 2025, followed by IT, product management and investment banking. A third-party summary puts the finance, banking and investments sector at around 13%, but that source labels the year inconsistently, so we do not rely on it. Treat IIM Bangalore as strong for finance if you are comfortable with a batch where consulting leads.
3. IIM Calcutta (MBA)
IIM Calcutta is NIRF 2025 rank 7. A summary of the 60th batch's placements reports that finance roles, covering investment banking, private equity and wealth, were 21.2% of offers, second to consulting at about 37%. The same summary lists a median pay of about Rs 34 lakh. That page contains small internal inconsistencies, so confirm the numbers with the official report.
4. XLRI Jamshedpur (PGDM-BM)
XLRI is NIRF 2025 rank 10. For the 2023-25 batch, BFSI made up 22% of the roles offered, and the average and median pay were reported at Rs 31.08 lakh and Rs 29 lakh. The recruiter list for BFSI includes Goldman Sachs, Citi, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Bank. Note that these numbers cover both the BM and HR programmes together, so the finance share for BM students alone may differ.
5. SPJIMR Mumbai (PGDM and PGDM-BM)
SPJIMR is NIRF 2025 rank 20. Its press release for the Class of 2026 reports 100% placement for 356 participants, with an average of Rs 33.75 lakh and a median of Rs 32.85 lakh. In that release, BFSI and IB/PE roles are quoted as 32% of the Finance cohort, which is a share of the cohort and not of the whole batch. Recruiters named for BFSI and IB/PE include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, HSBC and Barclays. Located in Mumbai, it is close to the city's financial district.
6. FMS Delhi (MBA)
FMS Delhi is not on the NIRF 2025 top 50 management list we checked, so no NIRF rank is quoted here. Its draw is the low fee and strong placements. For the 2024-26 batch, one report gives an average of Rs 32.27 lakh, a median of Rs 29.59 lakh and 287 students placed, and says finance and banking hiring grew 78%. That figure is a growth rate, not a share of offers. The same report puts the fee at around Rs 2 lakh. A report on an earlier batch lists American Express, Axis Bank, DBS Bank, HDFC Bank, Morgan Stanley, Standard Chartered and Piramal among recruiters.
7. JBIMS Mumbai (MMS)
JBIMS is not on the NIRF 2025 top 50 management list we checked. It is a Mumbai University institute with a long record in finance. For the MMS 2023-25 batch, one report says BFSI and IB made up 42% of total offers, the largest share, with Aditya Birla Capital, Axis Bank, Citi, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, HSBC and ICRA listed as recruiters. The same report gives an average of Rs 26.48 lakh and a median of Rs 26.15 lakh. Admission is through Maharashtra's centralised process, so competition is tied to the state quota system.
Entrance Exams and Selection
Most of these colleges follow the same pattern: an entrance score, then a written test and interview.
- CAT is the route for IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta and FMS Delhi. SPJIMR accepts CAT or GMAT. After a score-based shortlist, these colleges run a written ability test, a group discussion or a personal interview, and combine the results with your academics and work experience.
- XAT is the route for XLRI's PGDM-BM.
- MAH-CET is the route for JBIMS MMS. Seats are allotted through DTE Maharashtra counselling rounds, not through a college interview.
- FMS Delhi has used CAT as 50% of its shortlisting score in the 2024-26 cycle, with sectional weights in the weighted score, and then a WAT-PI stage. Weightages change, so confirm the current ones.
- SPJIMR looks at academic consistency, work experience and versatility before and after scores. Its application deadline for the 2027 intake is reported as 27 November 2026.
Selection criteria differ year to year. Read each college's current admissions brochure before you plan.
Who Should Choose What
- If you want the widest set of options: the three IIMs send large numbers of students into both finance and consulting. Expect consulting to lead the placement mix at most of them.
- If you want finance to be the clear priority: JBIMS (BFSI and IB 42% of offers in MMS 2023-25) and SPJIMR (finance cohort recruiters) stand out in the data we found. Both are in Mumbai.
- If cost matters most: FMS Delhi is reported at around Rs 2 lakh in fees, with a median of Rs 29.59 lakh for 2024-26.
- If you scored well in XAT rather than CAT: XLRI offers a strong BFSI recruiter list, with Goldman Sachs, Citi and HSBC among those named.
- If you are a Maharashtra-domicile candidate with a strong MAH-CET score: JBIMS deserves a close look.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which MBA specialisation is best for investment banking in India? There is no single best college. IIM graduates reach investment banking through general MBA programmes, and colleges like JBIMS and SPJIMR show high finance shares in the reports we read. Look at the recruiter list and the share of finance offers.
Do I need a finance background to get into these programmes? No. These are general management programmes, and you can specialise in finance through electives. Strong quantitative skills and some exposure to markets help in interviews.
Is a finance MBA from a non-IIM college worth it? It can be. JBIMS and FMS Delhi report finance-heavy recruiter lists, and XLRI and SPJIMR name major banks. Match the college's recruiter list to the roles you want.
Is CAT enough, or do I also need XAT and others? CAT covers the IIMs, FMS and SPJIMR. XLRI needs XAT, and JBIMS MMS needs MAH-CET. Many aspirants take two or more exams to widen their options.
Do placement numbers include all students? Not always. Some reports quote share of offers, some share of students, and some a share of a single specialisation cohort. Median pay and average pay are also reported differently across colleges.
How early should I start preparing for the interview stage? Right after the exam, if not before. Build your understanding of markets, current economic news and your own profile, because interview panels often probe your stated reason for choosing finance.
Final Word
Finance outcomes depend on the college, the specific batch and your own preparation. The numbers above come from the sources named for each college, some of them third-party summaries, and some carry small inconsistencies. Before you shortlist, check fees, placement reports, and selection criteria on each college's official website.
