Top B-Schools in India for Consulting 2026: Placements, Recruiters and Entrance Exams
Seven Indian B-schools where consulting is the largest recruiting domain, with the 2026 placement data we could verify, the firms that hire and the entrance exam each college needs.
Why Consulting Aspirants Should Read the Placement Data
Consulting is the biggest single destination for graduates of most top Indian B-schools. In the 2026 final placements, it was the largest domain at every college in this post, from about 36% to 45% of offers. That makes the college choice less about whether you can get a consulting offer and more about how competitive the process is and which kind of firm you want to join.
Consulting is also a wide label. It covers strategy firms such as McKinsey, BCG and Bain, large advisory and technology-consulting firms such as Accenture Strategy, Deloitte, EY-Parthenon and PwC, and smaller specialist firms. The pay, the work and the interview process differ a lot between these groups, so look at which firms actually recruit on a campus before you pick it.
How We Picked These Colleges
We used three inputs. First, the NIRF 2025 management ranking, where a college takes part. Second, consulting's share of offers in the 2026 final placements and the consulting recruiters named in the report. Third, how much verified data we could find from the institute or a news report.
This is not an official ranking for consulting. NIRF does not rank colleges by specialisation, and the order below is not a ranking. Colleges also report placements differently: some count offers, some count students, and a few give figures for a combined programme. Use the numbers to compare patterns, not to pick a winner by a single percentage point.
Some strong colleges are missing because we could not verify enough 2026 data for them.
Quick Comparison
Top B-Schools in India for Consulting
1. IIM Bangalore (PGP and PGPBA)
IIM Bangalore is NIRF 2025 rank 2. In the 2026 final placements, consulting made up 45% of offers, the highest share among the IIMs we checked. Accenture Strategy was the largest consulting recruiter with 94 offers, followed by Boston Consulting Group with 27, Bain & Company with 23 and EY-Parthenon with 22. The college also reported 283 pre-placement offers for the batch.
2. IIM Ahmedabad (PGP)
IIM Ahmedabad is NIRF 2025 rank 1. In the PGP class of 2026, consulting accounted for nearly 40% of offers, with BFSI a distant second at about 21%. The report named BCG, McKinsey, Bain, Kearney, Deloitte, Accenture Strategy and EY-Parthenon among consulting recruiters. By offers, Accenture Strategy led with 36, followed by BCG with 33 and McKinsey with 21. The college suits you if you want consulting with finance as a second option.
3. IIM Indore (MBA and dual degree)
IIM Indore is NIRF 2025 rank 8. In the 2026 final placements, consulting was the largest domain at 41% of offers, ahead of finance at 20%. The batch had 586 students, 240-plus recruiters and an average CTC of Rs 27.27 lakh with a median of Rs 25 lakh. The pay is lower than at the top four IIMs, but the consulting share is high, so it is worth a look if you want a consulting-heavy batch.
4. IIM Lucknow (PGP and PGP-ABM)
IIM Lucknow is NIRF 2025 rank 5. For the 2024-26 batch, consulting was 39% of placements, with an average consulting CTC of Rs 36.9 lakh, which is above the batch average of Rs 33.2 lakh. The offer count by recruiter is easy to read: Accenture made 56 offers, Deloitte 26, PwC 24, Bain 18, BCG 18 and McKinsey 12.
5. IIM Calcutta (MBA)
IIM Calcutta is NIRF 2025 rank 7. In its 61st batch's 2026 placements, consulting accounted for 206 offers, about 38% of 542 offers made to 458 students by 202 recruiters. BCG, Accenture Strategy, Bain, McKinsey and PwC were named among them. The college also has a strong finance profile, with more than 100 finance offers, so it keeps both paths open.
6. XLRI Jamshedpur (PGDM BM and HRM)
XLRI is NIRF 2025 rank 10. In the 2024-26 final placements, consulting was the largest domain at 36% of offers, ahead of BFSI at 18%. The recruiters named for consulting include BCG, Accenture Strategy and Consulting, Deloitte USI, EY-Parthenon and PwC. The average salary was Rs 31.4 lakh and the median Rs 29 lakh. These numbers cover the BM and HRM programmes together, so a BM student's picture may differ.
7. ISB (PGP)
ISB does not appear in the NIRF 2025 top 10, so there is no rank to quote. For the PGP class of 2026 (the 25th cohort), the institute reported 1,117 offers to 808 students, an average salary of Rs 37.29 lakh and a highest offer of Rs 1.56 crore. Consulting is named as a main hiring driver, with McKinsey, BCG, Bain and Deloitte among the recruiters, and Accenture as the top recruiter with more than 100 offers. No consulting share was reported, so we do not give one. ISB is a one-year programme for people with work experience, which suits a different kind of aspirant from the two-year IIM route.
Types of Consulting Firms Recruiting on Campus
The largest recruiter by offers at several colleges in 2026 was Accenture, so a high consulting share does not always mean a high share of strategy-firm offers. Check the recruiter list in each placement report.
Entrance Exams and Selection
For the IIMs, CAT gets you through the first filter, and your academics, work experience and interview then decide the seat. XLRI uses XAT followed by its own interview round. Exact weightage and cutoffs change every year, so read each college's admission page for the current cycle.
Who Should Choose What
- You want the highest consulting share in the data: IIM Bangalore (45%), IIM Indore (41%) and IIM Ahmedabad (about 40%) lead this list.
- You want consulting with finance as a backup: IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta both report a strong finance share next to consulting.
- You want a clear view of recruiters and pay by domain: IIM Lucknow publishes consulting pay and recruiter offer counts in a readable format.
- You are targeting XAT: XLRI, where consulting led its 2024-26 offers at 36%.
- You have work experience and want a one-year programme: ISB, through GMAT or GRE.
What Consulting Recruiters Look For
- Structured thinking: Case interviews test how you break down a problem, not whether you know the answer.
- Numbers comfort: Quick mental maths and clean data reading help in every round.
- Clear communication: You need to explain a recommendation in a few sentences.
- A story that fits: Be ready to explain why consulting and why this firm.
Start case practice early, since these skills take time to build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which B-school has the highest consulting share in India? Among the colleges we checked, IIM Bangalore reported the highest, at 45% of offers in its 2026 final placements. The figures use different methods, so treat small gaps as noise.
Do I need work experience for consulting after an MBA? Not always. Many consulting offers go to freshers at the IIMs and XLRI. ISB's one-year programme is aimed at candidates with work experience.
Are all consulting offers from McKinsey, BCG and Bain? No. Large advisory firms such as Accenture Strategy, Deloitte, EY-Parthenon and PwC made a big share of offers in 2026, and Accenture was the top recruiter at several colleges.
Which exam should I take for consulting-focused colleges? CAT for the IIMs in this list, XAT for XLRI, and GMAT or GRE for ISB.
Is the consulting share the same as the number of students in consulting? No. Most colleges report the share of offers, and some students hold more than one offer. Some report the share of students instead.
Does the college rank matter for consulting? A strong brand helps with shortlisting, but your case-interview skills, academics and profile decide the final offer.
Final Word
Consulting is the largest domain at the top Indian B-schools, so pick the college by the type of firms you want, the exam you are taking and the programme format that suits you. Placement numbers change every year and are reported in different ways, so confirm fees, placement figures and selection criteria on each college's official website before you decide.
