Exam Pattern in Detail

SNAP

SNAP is a computer-based test of 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, so you get exactly one minute per question on average. Each question is worth 1 mark, and a wrong answer costs 0.25.

Section Questions Marks
General English 15 15
Analytical and Logical Reasoning 25 25
Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation and Data Sufficiency 20 20
Total 60 60

There is no sectional time limit, which means you can start with the section you are strongest in. The catch is speed: the Analytical and Logical Reasoning section is the biggest, and it eats time if you do not decide quickly what to leave.

Note that some sources disagree on whether the English section carries Reading Comprehension and whether Data Sufficiency appears every year. Check the official SNAP bulletin for the current list.

NMAT by GMAC

NMAT has 108 questions in 120 minutes, split into three sections with their own time limits. Each correct answer earns 1 mark, and there is no penalty for wrong answers.

Section Questions Time
Language Skills 36 28 minutes
Logical Reasoning 36 40 minutes
Quantitative Skills 36 52 minutes
Total 108 120 minutes

Because the time is fixed per section, you cannot borrow minutes from a section you finish early. The Quant section gives you the most time per question, but the questions are also the most calculation-heavy.

Which Colleges Accept Which Exam?

  • SNAP: Symbiosis institutes, including SIBM Pune, SCMHRD Pune and SIIB.
  • NMAT: NMIMS campuses (Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and others), K J Somaiya, and several other private institutes. The registration fee covers five score reports, and you can add more for a small extra charge.

Many colleges accept more than one exam, and the list changes every year. Do not rely on this blog for the final list. Open the admission page of each college on your shortlist and check which exam scores it accepts this year.

Difficulty and Style: How They Actually Feel

SNAP NMAT
Pressure High: 60 questions in 60 minutes Moderate: more time, but sectional clocks
Reasoning The biggest section, 25 of 60 questions One third of the paper
Risk of wrong answers -0.25 makes random guessing costly No penalty, so you attempt everything
Retake flexibility Fixed dates You pick the slot
Best strength Fast reading and sharp decision making Steady accuracy and stamina

Reports in most prep circles describe SNAP as easy to moderate in difficulty but speed-intensive, and NMAT as moderate. Treat that as a rule of thumb rather than a promise, since each year's paper differs.

Which One Should You Take?

Take SNAP if: - Symbiosis (SIBM Pune, SCMHRD) is your main target. - You are strong in logical reasoning and can make quick decisions. - You are comfortable skipping questions to protect your accuracy.

Take NMAT if: - NMIMS or a Somaiya-type college is your main target. - You want a flexible slot and the chance to retake quickly. - You are accurate but slow, and a no-negative-marking paper suits you.

Take both if you can. The syllabi overlap heavily (verbal, reasoning and arithmetic-based quant), so one preparation covers most of both. Just practise two different strategies: skip and protect accuracy for SNAP, attempt everything for NMAT.

Preparation Strategy for Each

For SNAP: - Practise 60-minute full mocks from day one, since the time pressure is the real challenge. - Do the reasoning section first or second, depending on your strength, and leave any set that is not cracking in 2 minutes. - Keep an attempt target and a wrong-answer limit, because every 4 wrong answers cost 1 full mark.

For NMAT: - Practise each section with its own timer, 28, 40 and 52 minutes. - Never leave a question blank. Guess intelligently, since there is no penalty. - Build calculation speed for the Quant section, as 36 questions in 52 minutes is tighter than it looks.

For both: - Read daily. Newspaper editorials improve your English section for either exam. - Solve 10 to 15 logical reasoning puzzles a week. - Keep an error log of every mistake, tagged by cause: concept, calculation, reading or decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SNAP easier than NMAT? Most students find the SNAP content easier, but the 60-minute limit and negative marking make it harder to score well. NMAT is longer and has sectional timing, but no penalty. Which is easier depends on whether your weakness is speed or accuracy.

Can I take both SNAP and NMAT? Yes. The two exams have separate registrations, and many aspirants take both because the preparation overlaps.

How many attempts do I get? Up to three in both exams. For SNAP, the best of your three scores is used. For NMAT, you get the first attempt plus two retakes in the cycle, and each retake carries a fee.

Is there negative marking? SNAP has it: 0.25 is deducted for each wrong answer. NMAT has none.

Which exam is better for SIBM Pune? SNAP, since Symbiosis institutes use SNAP scores for their MBA programmes.

Which exam is better for NMIMS? NMAT, which NMIMS uses for its MBA admissions.

Is a good CAT score enough instead? CAT opens the IIMs and many top colleges, but many private colleges admit through SNAP or NMAT. Having a backup score gives you more options.

Final Word

Pick the exam by the college you want, then by your own strengths. If you can, take both and use the same prep plan. Dates, fees and patterns can change, so always confirm the latest details on the official SNAP and NMAT by GMAC websites before you register.
