IPMAT Prep: How It's Actually Different From CAT Prep

A common and costly assumption among IPMAT aspirants is that CAT prep material, simply attempted a notch easier, is good enough IPMAT prep. It is not, and the gap between the two exams is wide enough that treating IPMAT as CAT's junior version usually leaves a real percentile on the table.

The written component changes everything

The most structurally important difference is that IPMAT, unlike CAT, includes a written ability test as part of the overall selection process at most IIMs offering the program. This is not a formality. It is scored, it factors into your final result, and almost no CAT aspirant spends any time preparing for it, because CAT simply does not have an equivalent.

The written test typically asks you to construct an argument, take a position, or write a structured response to a prompt within a fixed time. This rewards clear, organized writing far more than creative flourish. Aspirants who treat this as an afterthought, something to wing on exam day, consistently underperform relative to their quant and verbal scores. If you are serious about IPMAT, this deserves genuine practice time, ideally timed writing sessions on realistic prompts, reviewed by someone who can give you structural feedback, not just grammar corrections.

Quant calibration is different, not just easier

IPMAT quant does draw from a similar topic pool to CAT, number systems, algebra, geometry, arithmetic, but the difficulty calibration and question style are meaningfully different. IPMAT tends to reward speed and foundational accuracy more than the layered, multi-step problem solving that CAT increasingly favors in its harder QA sets.

This means the CAT prep habit of specifically hunting down the hardest, most convoluted problems to build resilience is not the highest leverage use of your time for IPMAT. You are better served drilling foundational speed and accuracy across a wide range of topics than obsessing over a small number of exceptionally hard problems. Foundational fluency, not depth on outliers, is what IPMAT quant rewards.

Verbal ability leans more classically academic

IPMAT verbal ability sections often include more direct grammar, vocabulary, and sentence correction questions relative to CAT's current format, which has shifted heavily toward inference-based reading comprehension and away from standalone grammar testing. If your CAT VARC prep has been entirely reading comprehension focused, which is a reasonable strategy for CAT itself given its current pattern, you may find yourself underprepared for the more classically structured verbal ability questions IPMAT still includes.

Spend deliberate time on grammar rules, sentence correction, and vocabulary in context specifically for IPMAT prep, even if you have deprioritized this for CAT. The two exams have quietly diverged here, and treating them as interchangeable on verbal ability is one of the more common blind spots.

Age and cohort context matters more than aspirants realize

IPMAT is largely attempted by aspirants straight out of class twelve, a meaningfully different cohort from the working professionals and recent graduates who make up a large share of CAT's applicant pool. This affects the exam's design philosophy in subtle ways, including pacing expectations and the assumption of less prior exposure to advanced quant concepts. Understanding that you are being benchmarked against this specific cohort, not against CAT's broader and older applicant base, should inform how much weight you put on any given topic's difficulty relative to how CAT treats the same topic.

If IPMAT is your genuine target, build a prep plan around it specifically. Borrow structure and discipline from CAT prep methodology, daily practice, section-wise drilling, timed mocks, but do not assume the content emphasis transfers one to one. The exams share a family resemblance, not an identical blueprint.
