Why Topic-Wise Practice Works Better Than Random Practice Sets
Say your mock results consistently show one specific weakness, Time and Work, or Arrangements, or Para Jumbles. The instinctively obvious next step is to practice more questions of exactly that type until it stops being a weakness. This sounds simple. In practice, most available PYQ resources make it surprisingly difficult to actually do this.
The structural problem with most PYQ banks
Most previous year question resources are organized by paper, full papers, or at best by section, VARC, DILR, QA. If you want to specifically drill Time and Work, you are left manually scanning through years of full papers or sectional sets, hunting for the handful of questions that happen to be on your actual weak topic, surrounded by dozens of questions on topics you are already comfortable with. This is slow, demotivating, and an inefficient use of practice time when the goal is highly specific.
The alternative most aspirants fall back on is generic, non-PYQ topic-wise material, question banks not drawn from actual CAT papers but constructed to approximate a topic. This solves the volume problem but reintroduces the approximation problem discussed elsewhere, generic material does not carry CAT's specific patterns in how it tests that topic, what depth it goes to, or how it constructs wrong options within that subject area.
What topic-wise PYQ practice actually solves
Genuine topic-wise practice, built specifically from real PYQs but organized and filterable by topic rather than by paper or year, solves both problems simultaneously. You get real, examiner-authored questions, carrying all the pattern authenticity discussed elsewhere, but filtered down to exactly the topic you need, without having to manually dig through irrelevant material to find them.
This matters most in the specific, high-leverage window right after a mock reveals a weakness. The value of fixing a weak topic decays the longer the gap between identifying it and actually drilling it, both because the specific error pattern is freshest in your memory right after the mock, and because motivation to fix a named, specific weakness is highest immediately after seeing it cost you marks. A resource that lets you go directly from "I am weak at Arrangements" to twenty real Arrangements PYQs, with no manual searching in between, closes that gap in minutes instead of an evening of scattered searching across old papers.
Why this compounds over a long prep timeline
Prep spanning four to six months inevitably surfaces multiple specific weak topics over time, not all at once, but sequentially as you progress and your mock performance highlights new gaps. A prep workflow that makes topic-isolated PYQ practice easy means each new weakness gets addressed quickly and specifically, rather than accumulating into a vague, general sense that "DILR is my weak section" without ever pinning down which specific set types within DILR are actually the problem.
This specificity is the whole point. "I am weak at DILR" is not an actionable diagnosis. "I am weak at Arrangements-based DILR sets specifically, but fine at Data Interpretation sets" is actionable, and it is only actionable if your practice resource lets you isolate and drill that specific subset without friction. The more granular your diagnosis, and the easier it is to immediately act on that granularity with real PYQ material, the faster a genuine weakness gets fixed rather than just generally practiced around.
