TITA and Negative Marking: The Math Nobody Actually Does
Ask ten CAT aspirants whether they guess on questions they are unsure of, and you will get ten different personal philosophies, most of them based on gut feeling rather than the actual arithmetic of expected value. This is a question with a calculable right answer, and the calculation changes meaningfully depending on whether you are looking at an MCQ or a TITA question.
The MCQ guessing calculation
CAT MCQs typically award three marks for a correct answer and deduct one mark for an incorrect one, with no penalty for leaving a question unattempted. If you guess randomly among four options with zero information, your expected value is three marks times a one in four chance of being correct, minus one mark times a three in four chance of being wrong. That works out to a small negative expected value, which means blind guessing is a losing strategy over time, even though any individual guess might pay off.
The moment you can eliminate even one option, the math shifts meaningfully. Down to three options, your expected value becomes roughly break-even. Down to two options, having genuinely eliminated half the choices through some partial reasoning, the expected value turns clearly positive. This is the actual, defensible threshold. If you can eliminate at least two of four options through partial knowledge, not a guess about a guess, attempting the question is mathematically justified. If you are choosing among all four with no elimination at all, skipping is the better long run decision, even though it will feel like you are leaving points on the table in any specific instance.
Why TITA changes the calculation entirely
TITA questions on CAT typically carry no negative marking at all, which means the expected value math is completely different. There is no downside to attempting a TITA question you have partially worked through, even if your final answer is uncertain, because an incorrect attempt costs you nothing beyond the time spent. The only real cost with TITA is time, not points. This means the actual decision you are making is not "should I risk this" but "is the expected time cost of attempting this worth more to me elsewhere in the section." A TITA question that requires five minutes of calculation for uncertain payoff might still be worth skipping, not because of a scoring penalty, but because that time is better spent securing two easier questions elsewhere in the section.
This distinction matters because aspirants often import their MCQ risk aversion into TITA questions where it does not apply, skipping a TITA they could have made real progress on out of a general caution that only makes sense for negative marked questions. Separate these two decisions explicitly in your head during the exam. MCQ, calculate elimination before attempting. TITA, calculate time cost before attempting, not points risk.
Building this into your mock review
After every mock, go back through your MCQ attempts and categorize each one honestly. Did you attempt it with genuine elimination down to two options, or did you attempt it as a guess among three or four. Track your accuracy specifically on the genuine two-option elimination attempts separately from blind guesses. If your two-option accuracy is meaningfully above fifty percent, which it should be if your elimination reasoning is sound, that confirms the strategy is working correctly for you specifically, not just in the abstract.
The goal is not to memorize a rule and apply it mechanically under pressure, exam day rarely allows for clean arithmetic in the moment. The goal is to build enough repetition with this calculation during practice that the correct decision becomes closer to instinct by the time it matters.
