DILR Puzzles and Seating Arrangement: A Practical Approach
Ask any recent CAT aspirant which DILR set type worries them most, and puzzles or seating arrangement comes up more often than anything else. There's a reason for that. These sets look deceptively simple when you first read them, a handful of people, a table, a few conditions, and then twelve minutes later you're still trying to place the third person while the clock keeps moving.
Why this set type is different from data based DILR
Caselets and data heavy sets, tables, bar charts, business scenarios, reward careful reading and arithmetic once you understand the data. Puzzles and seating arrangement reward something else entirely, systematically working through logical constraints until a unique arrangement falls out. There is no shortcut to skip the systematic part. The skill is doing it fast and doing it right the first time, not doing it cleverly.
The single biggest mistake
Most lost time in these sets comes from one habit, trying to hold the arrangement in your head instead of building it out on paper as you go. A seating arrangement with six people and four conditions has genuinely too many moving pieces to track mentally without errors, and one small memory slip six minutes in means restarting from scratch, which is where most of the wasted time actually comes from.
Build a grid or diagram immediately. Place every condition you're given onto it as you read, not after you finish reading. Conditions that fix a position absolutely, someone sits at one end, go down first. Conditions that only constrain relative position, someone sits next to someone else, get layered in after the absolute conditions have narrowed the possibilities.
Reading order changes everything
A second common mistake is reading conditions in the order they're presented rather than the order that's most useful. CAT DILR puzzle conditions are rarely written in the sequence that solves the puzzle fastest. Read through once for a general sense of the setup, then go back and apply the most restrictive conditions first, regardless of where they appeared in the original text. A condition like exactly one person sits between two named people narrows possibilities far more than a vague condition like someone doesn't sit at the end, so it should be applied earlier even if it was mentioned later.
Knowing when to abandon a set
This might be the most valuable and least practiced skill in all of DILR. Not every puzzle set is worth finishing. If you're four minutes in with barely any conditions placed and no clear path forward, that set is very likely a low return trap for your specific skill level that day, and the correct move is walking away with partial credit or none, not sunk cost reasoning that keeps you there another six minutes hoping it clicks.
The only way to build good judgment about when to abandon a set is exposure to enough real sets that you develop a feel for how a solvable puzzle unfolds versus one that's fighting you the whole way. This is a pattern recognition skill built through volume, not something you can shortcut through theory alone.
A practical practice structure
Work through one complete puzzle or seating arrangement set at a time, under a real six to eight minute constraint, every single day rather than doing five easier questions in isolation. Diagram every single one, even the ones that feel obvious, since building the habit under easy conditions is what makes it automatic under hard ones. Review afterward by re-solving any set you couldn't finish untimed, specifically to understand which condition you should have applied earlier.
