CAT Syllabus 2026: Section-Wise Topics and Weightage
Aspirants search for the CAT syllabus expecting something like a school curriculum, a fixed list of chapters that will definitely appear. CAT doesn't quite work that way. There is no officially published syllabus. What exists instead is roughly a decade of consistent patterns across VARC, DILR and QA, patterns stable enough that you can plan preparation around them with real confidence.
Here is what that actually looks like, section by section.
VARC, roughly 24 questions
Reading Comprehension dominates this section almost completely, typically accounting for around two thirds of VARC's questions across four or five passages. The passages come from a genuinely wide range, business, science, philosophy, literature, social commentary, and the honest preparation advice here has never really changed. Reading widely and consistently for months builds the actual skill being tested far more than any shortcut does.
The remaining Verbal Ability questions, para jumbles, para summary, the odd sentence out format, reward a different skill entirely, pattern recognition and logical sequencing rather than comprehension. These are also entirely TITA with no negative marking, which quietly makes them some of the highest value questions in the whole exam if you've practiced the pattern.
DILR, roughly 22 questions
This is the section most aspirants describe as unpredictable, and there's some truth to that, but the unpredictability is mostly in which specific sets show up, not in the broad categories those sets come from. Seating arrangements, games and tournaments, caselets built around tables and data, and reasoning heavy set types built around rules and constraints show up consistently year after year.
The single highest leverage skill in DILR isn't solving faster. It's set selection, correctly identifying within the first two or three minutes which sets are actually solvable in reasonable time and which ones are traps that will eat twelve minutes and yield one question. Practicing full sets under time pressure builds this instinct in a way that scattered question practice simply does not.
QA, roughly 22 questions
Algebra carries the largest share here, linear equations, quadratic equations, polynomials, logarithms, surds and indices, modulus, typically representing something close to 40 percent of the section on its own. Arithmetic follows, then Geometry and Mensuration, then Number Systems and what's usually called Modern Math, sequences, permutations and combinations, probability.
If you're deciding where limited prep time goes, Algebra earns priority not just because it's heavily weighted but because it rewards logical reasoning over memorized formulas, which makes it genuinely learnable at speed even starting from a weaker base. Geometry, by contrast, tends to be concept and visualization heavy rather than formula heavy in how CAT actually tests it, which changes how you should practice it.
What this means for how you plan
Two consistent truths sit underneath all of this. Reading Comprehension, Algebra, and DILR set selection together make up close to half the entire paper's difficulty and question count. Master those three specifically before spreading effort evenly across every sub topic, and you're preparing for the exam CAT has actually been for the last several years, not the exam a generic syllabus list implies exists.
