CAT Score vs Percentile 2026: What Your Marks Actually Mean
Every year, around the time CAT results come out, a strange kind of confusion shows up. Two aspirants compare scores. One has 78 marks, the other has 84. The one with 78 ends up with a higher percentile. Nobody did anything wrong here. This is just what CAT scoring actually does, and if you don't understand it going in, the whole system feels arbitrary right when you need it to feel predictable.
So let's separate the two things that get used almost interchangeably but mean completely different things.
Score and percentile are not the same measurement
Your CAT score is a count. Three marks for every correct answer, minus one for every wrong MCQ, zero penalty for an unattempted question or a wrong TITA answer. Add it up across VARC, DILR and QA and you get a number, typically somewhere between 190 and 210 marks total in recent years.
Your percentile is a rank, expressed as a comparison. A 99 percentile means you did better than 99 percent of everyone who sat for CAT that year. It says nothing about your actual marks. It says everything about where you landed relative to roughly two to three lakh other people attempting the same normalized paper.
The reason these two diverge is CAT's three slot structure. Morning, afternoon and evening papers are not identical, and there is no realistic way to make three separately written papers exactly equal in difficulty. So CAT applies a normalization process, essentially adjusting each slot's scores so that a candidate's relative standing within their own slot is preserved even when the raw papers differed. A slightly tougher slot might see 4 or 5 marks added back during normalization. A slightly easier slot might see marks subtracted. This is why comparing your raw score to a friend who wrote a different slot tells you almost nothing useful.
Roughly what recent years have needed
I want to be careful here, because anyone giving you an exact number is guessing. The mapping shifts every year depending on how the specific test taking population performed and how each slot's difficulty compared. But looking at the pattern across the last several years, a reasonable rough guide looks like this.
Somewhere around 85 to 100 marks out of roughly 200 has typically landed in 99 percentile territory. Somewhere around 55 to 70 marks has typically landed near 95 percentile. Around 35 to 45 marks tends to sit near 90 percentile. These ranges move a few marks up or down depending on the year's overall difficulty, and a genuinely tough year can shift the 99 percentile threshold down by ten or more marks compared to an easier year.
What this means practically is that chasing a specific target score is less useful than it sounds. Chasing accuracy and section wise consistency gets you to a good percentile regardless of which way that year's normalization swings. Chasing a number you saw on a forum from two years ago can leave you either underprepared or unnecessarily anxious, depending on which direction the exam moved.
Why sectional percentile matters as much as overall
A high overall percentile with one weak section is a genuinely common trap. Most IIMs apply sectional cutoffs alongside the overall cutoff, and a 99 percentile overall candidate with an 82 percentile in one section can still miss a shortlist at a school with a strict sectional requirement. This is worth internalizing early rather than discovering it in January. Balanced performance across VARC, DILR and QA is not just good practice advice, it is what actually protects your shortlist chances.
What this should change about how you prepare
Two things, mainly. First, stop treating a specific raw score as the finish line. Track accuracy and attempts per section instead, since those are the numbers that actually predict percentile regardless of how any single year's normalization plays out. Second, treat all three sections as equally worth defending. A brilliant QA score does not buy back a weak VARC section once sectional cutoffs are in play.
