CAT 2026 VARC: 50-Day Preparation Strategy for 95+ Percentile

With CAT 2026 reported for 29 November, you have about 50 days from 10 October. VARC is the section that scares people the most because there is no formula to memorise. The good news: reading skill can improve in 50 days if you practise the right way, which means timed passages, honest analysis and a daily reading habit. This plan splits the 50 days into five phases and includes 10 CAT-style VARC sectionals.

What Does a 95+ Percentile VARC Score Look Like?

CAT VARC has been around 24 questions in 40 minutes in recent years, roughly two-thirds reading comprehension and one-third verbal ability. These are targets, not cutoffs, and the paper's difficulty changes every year.

Parameter Target
Questions to attempt 16 to 20
Accuracy on attempted questions 80 to 85%+
Time per RC passage About 8 to 9 minutes including questions
Time on verbal ability (VA) questions About 8 to 10 minutes in total
Main focus Passage selection, option elimination, accuracy

Which VARC Topics Should You Prioritise?

Priority Area What to practise
1 Reading comprehension Main idea, inference, tone and attitude, detail, author's view, application questions
1 Para-jumbles (TITA) Sentence ordering with no options to guide you
2 Para-summary Picking the option that captures the whole paragraph
2 Odd-sentence-out Spotting the sentence that does not belong
3 Para-completion Predicting the missing last sentence

RC carries most of the section, so most of your hours go there. Verbal ability questions are quicker to improve, so they are a good place to bank easy marks.

The 50-Day Plan at a Glance

Phase Days Focus
Phase 1 1 to 10 Diagnostic and RC foundations
Phase 2 11 to 20 Verbal ability types and RC speed
Phase 3 21 to 30 RC genres and accuracy
Phase 4 31 to 40 Mixed practice and sectionals
Phase 5 41 to 50 Sectionals, mocks, revision and exam strategy

The 10 VARC sectionals fall on Days 1, 10, 20, 30, 34, 37, 40, 43, 45 and 48. Take full mocks on about Days 35, 41 and 46, or more if you follow a 15, 20 or 25 mock plan.

Daily Reading Habit (All 50 Days)

Spend 30 minutes a day reading something long-form: an editorial, an essay or a magazine piece. Rotate genres through the week: economics, science, philosophy, history, society and culture. After reading, write one line on the main idea and one on the author's attitude. This trains the exact skill the RC section tests.

Phase 1 (Days 1 to 10): Diagnostic and RC Foundations

Days Focus Practice target
1 VARC Sectional #1 (diagnostic) and analysis 1 sectional
2 to 4 RC technique: reading for structure, main idea and tone 2 passages a day, untimed first
5 to 7 RC question types: inference, detail, application 2 to 3 passages a day, then timed
8 to 9 Mixed RC practice with a time limit 3 passages a day
10 VARC Sectional #2 and analysis 1 sectional

Phase 1 review. For each wrong RC question, write why the correct option was right and why yours was tempting. Tag each error as misread passage, over-inference, extreme option or time pressure.

Phase 2 (Days 11 to 20): Verbal Ability and RC Speed

Days Focus Practice target
11 to 12 Para-jumbles (TITA) 20 to 25 sets
13 to 14 Para-summary 20 to 25 questions
15 Odd-sentence-out 20 to 25 questions
16 Para-completion 20 to 25 questions
17 to 19 RC: 3 passages a day, timed at about 8 to 9 minutes each 3 passages a day
20 VARC Sectional #3 and analysis 1 sectional

Phase 3 (Days 21 to 30): RC Genres and Accuracy

Genre fear loses marks. Spend this phase making every genre feel familiar.

Days Focus Practice target
21 to 22 Abstract and philosophy passages 3 passages a day
23 to 24 Humanities, history and culture passages 3 passages a day
25 to 26 Science and technology passages 3 passages a day
27 to 28 Economics and society passages 3 passages a day
29 Mixed passages, timed 4 passages
30 VARC Sectional #4 and analysis 1 sectional

Phase 4 (Days 31 to 40): Mixed Practice and Sectionals

Now the balance flips: about 30% learning and 70% practice.

Days Focus Practice target
31 to 33 Mixed RC and VA sets, full-section timing 1 section-length set a day
34 VARC Sectional #5 and analysis 1 sectional
35 Full mock, then analyse the VARC section in detail 1 full mock
36 Weak question type repair 20 questions
37 VARC Sectional #6 and analysis 1 sectional
38 to 39 Mixed RC and VA sets with passage-selection practice 1 section-length set a day
40 VARC Sectional #7 and analysis 1 sectional

Your Daily VARC Routine From Day 31

Activity Time
Reading habit 30 min
Timed RC or VA set 40 min
Analysis 40 to 60 min
Error-log revision 15 min
GRADSCALE Daily Drill 15 to 20 min
Total About 2.5 to 3 hours

Phase 5 (Days 41 to 50): Sectionals, Mocks and Revision

Day Focus
41 Full mock, in the same slot as your CAT slot
42 Analyse the VARC section: where did time go, which passage did you pick first
43 VARC Sectional #8, with passage-selection practice
44 Weak question types and your error log
45 VARC Sectional #9
46 Last full mock
47 Revise your error log and your rules for each question type
48 VARC Sectional #10, selection and accuracy only
49 Light day: 2 passages untimed, early night
50 Rest, admit card and route check

How to Analyse a VARC Sectional

  1. For each RC passage: write the main idea in one line before you check the answers. Then check each wrong answer and note the trap: extreme language, out-of-scope claim, reversed relationship or half-right option.
  2. For each VA question: write the logic you used. For para-jumbles, note the opening and the linking words. For summaries, note which option added a new idea.
  3. For timing: write down which passage you started with, where you got stuck and how long you spent on the worst question.

Passage Selection and Time Strategy

  • Skim the first lines of all four passages and start with the one you find easiest.
  • Do TITA para-jumbles early, since they have no options to trap you.
  • Cap each RC question at about 2 minutes. If two options are still alive, choose the better one and move on.
  • Leave the densest passage for last, and skip it entirely if time is short.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Reading only RC and ignoring verbal ability
  2. Reading the passage too slowly "to understand everything"
  3. Picking options that are true in general but not stated in the passage
  4. Not analysing why the wrong option was tempting
  5. Avoiding genres you dislike
  6. Taking sectionals without a time limit
  7. Rushing the last passage and losing accuracy

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I improve VARC in 50 days? Yes, if you read daily, practise timed passages and analyse your errors. Technique and accuracy improve faster than vocabulary.

How many RC passages should I practise every day? Between 2 and 4, depending on the phase. Quality of analysis matters more than the count.

Is vocabulary important for CAT VARC? Reading comprehension and verbal ability questions test understanding in context, not word lists. Learn words from what you read.

Should I attempt all the questions? Not necessarily. Many students do better attempting 16 to 20 questions at high accuracy than all of them with careless errors. Adjust the number from your sectional data.

How many sectionals and mocks should I take? This plan has 10 VARC sectionals and about 3 full mocks. Extra mocks, if you follow a 15, 20 or 25 mock plan, go on your non-sectional days.

Final Word

Read every day, practise timed passages, analyse every mistake and keep a clear passage-selection routine. Dates and the exam pattern can change, so confirm the latest details on the official CAT website.
